BRIC+ Study Tours

exclusive insights into global emerging markets

BRIC+ Study Tours provide exclusive insights into global emerging markets and in particular, the Big Rapidly Industrialising Countries of Brazil, Russia, India and China.

Each Study Tour is a highly tailored, week-long, in-country immersion program of lectures, workshops and case studies with clear learning aims and outcomes. It's no junket. It's a jam-packed, marathon seven-day program focused on the economic, business, investment, and social drivers of that country, highlighting future trends, challenges and risks - and the implications for portfolio construction.

Open by application to a small, diverse group of 25 senior delegates, BRIC+ Study Tours will materially increase your knowledge and experience of these increasingly influential markets and help you build better quality portfolios.

Who is it suited to?

BRIC+ Study Tours are relevant to all wealth management professionals who have a responsibility to understand the drivers and outlook for investment markets, one of the three pillars of portfolio construction.

Why attend a BRIC+ Study Tour?

Just as England grew to economic dominance in the late 1800s and the US in the 1900s, this century we'll see the emergence and dominance of the Big Rapidly Industrialising Countries - particularly Brazil, Russia, India and China.

The international system - as constructed following the Second World War - will be almost unrecognisable by 2025 owing to the rise of emerging powers, a globalising economy, an historic transfer of relative wealth and economic power from West to East... By 2025, the international system will be a global multi-polar one with gaps in national power continuing to narrow between developed and developing countries.
"Global Trends 2025: A world transformed - US National Intelligence Council, November 2008

A decade ago, no one had even heard the term 'BRIC' let alone appreciated that Brazil, Russia, India and China would be key influences on the world economy and investment markets this century. That changed in 2003, when Goldman Sachs published its landmark paper 'Dreaming with BRICs: The path to 2050' which mapped out GDP growth, income per capita and currency movements in the BRIC economies through to 2050:

"If things go right,  in less than 40 years, the BRIC economies together could be larger than the G6 in US dollar terms... India's market will nearly equal that of the US, while China's will be vastly bigger. Brazil and Russia will each be larger markets than Japan, UK, Germany, France or Italy... The weight of the BRICs in investment portfolios could rise sharply."

While 2050 sounds a long way off, the changes will be most dramatic before 2030 - in our life times and careers. One of the major effects is likely to play out over the next decade, as the growing BRIC middle class demands high value-added goods, providing significant opportunities for global economies. In a 2010 update, Goldman Sachs' noted that:

"The BRICs have dramatically impacted the global economic landscape, contributing over a third (36.3%) of world GPD growth from 2000 to 2009, and growing to a combined 25% of world GDP (in PPP terms). Looking forward to the coming decade, we expect this trend to continue and become even more pronounced... By 2020, the BRICs will account for a third of the global economy (in PPP terms) and around 49% of global GDP growth".

It is therefore imperative that wealth management professionals become as familiar with the developing markets as they are the developed markets - and the most sensible place to start is with the BRIC countries. They're not only the biggest growth markets, they're also excellent case studies for the challenges and opportunities within other, smaller developing markets.

Of course, the most effective and rewarding way to learn about any investment market is to experience it for yourself!

In this exclusive interview with PortfolioConstruction publisher, Graham Rich, the inventor of the BRIC acronym, Chairman of Goldman Sachs Asset Management, Jim O'Neill, explains why in his view it is imperative that wealth management professionals visit the BRIC countries for themselves.

BRIC+ Study Tour program overview

Each BRIC+ Study Tour is an independently developed and managed, high intensity, jam-packed seven-day in-country learning program of unique briefings, case studies and site visits with clear learning aims and outcomes. Delegates are provided with pre-reading papers to absorb prior to the Study Tour.  It's no junket!

A BRIC+ Study Tour is:

Effective – you'll come away with exclusive insights into the country's economy, business environment, investment markets and social drivers that you just cannot get sitting at your desk or attending briefings in your home country.

Exclusive - you'll be one of a very small, high-quality peer group of senior, experienced wealth management professionals with whom you will form career-long professional friendships.

Expert – you'll meet and debate with our exclusive network of local experts and businesses and take away an insider's perspective on what's really happening in the country.

Engaging – in-depth Socratic debate and active discussion is encouraged (indeed, expected!) and hearing other delegates' unique views will help test and form your own key takeouts.

Efficient – after just seven days, you'll have an invaluable, first-hand knowledge, understanding and experience of the country and the complex issues related to including an exposure to it in portfolios.

A taste of a BRIC+ Study Tour

The program is managed by the PortfolioConstruction Forum team and led by publisher, Graham Rich >.

BRIC+ Study Tours are independent - delegates pay their own way - so the aim is not to promote specific products.

Each program features a unique faculty of investment and business experts from within the BRIC country and around the world, and is solely focused on four core themes - the economy, business environment, investment markets, and social drivers of that country - highlighting future trends, challenges and risks, and the implications for portfolio construction.

What past delegates say

Since 2006, we've introduced more than 130 wealth management professionals to the BRIC countries, including a number who have now completed all four BRIC+ Study Tours. Here's a sample of their views of the BRIC+ Study Tours:

Chris Cuffe

The BRIC+ Study Tour was the most influential one week of study I have done in my life... You can't form an opinion, view or theory without going there yourself. It's only by spending time on the ground, researching the market, meeting the locals and expatriates, and developing business connections that you can understand what is going on there. However, a BRIC+ Study Tour delivers more than this, with networking and personal professional development among a number of other delegate benefits.

Jeremy Pree

If you are serious about investing, first hand experience through the excellent BRIC+ Study Tour program is the only way to go.

Andrew Keay

The BRIC+ Study Tour was one of the most valuable study experiences I have encountered in my 16-plus years in the industry... Each stage of the tour was exceptionally well planned. The speakers and company visits were structured in a staged manner that built on what we had learned in preceding sessions. The quality of speakers was outstanding.

Phil Eley

If you haven't been on a BRIC+ Study Tour, you are missing a wonderful insight into the global economy and its developing powerhouses.

Tony Hartley

Insightful, interesting and immensely rewarding. It's a program that all industry thought leaders must attend.

Paul Zwi

The BRIC+ Study Tour was an amazing eye-opener and an unforgettable experience.

Robert Lipman

I have attended all four BRIC+ Study Tours. The program in its totality is an enriching learning experience that should be mandatory for senior executives in wealth management.

John McMurdo

One of the most profound learning experiences I have had in a 20+ year financial services career.
