PortfolioConstruction Forum Conference

facilitating debate on the markets, strategies and investing

PortfolioConstruction Forum Conference facilitates debate on the three pillars of portfolio construction – markets, strategies and investing.

Since 2002, it has gained a reputation as THE investment conference of the year. It is a jam-packed, marathon three-day, 25-hour program featuring 40 intensive, objective, interactive sessions and more than 35 carefully selected local and international portfolio construction experts.  Held in Sydney in August each year, Conference is a companion program to our annual Markets Summit in February.

Limited to 500 delegates, Conference will challenge and refresh your portfolio construction thinking, giving you tangible and meaningful takeouts to apply in practice to build better quality investor portfolios.

Who is it suited to?

Conference is for portfolio construction Practitioners first and foremost – by that, we mean those who design, build and/or manage investment portfolios (or who must understand how others do so) including those whose primary role is:
- principal, researcher, investment committee member, adviser or paraplanner in an advisory firm or family office;
- researcher/analyst with an investment research house, asset consulting firm, or platform;
- researcher/analyst/portfolio manager with a manage-the-manager fund manager; or
a super fund executive, trustee or investment committee member.

To retain the focus on Practitioners, we tightly manage to a 4:1 ratio of Practitioners to Non-Practitioners and limit the total number of delegates to 100 for the Masterclass and 500 for the main Conference.

What makes it different?

Conference is the flagship program of PortfolioConstruction Forum. It has earned its reputation as THE investment conference of the year due to five key differentiators:

  • practitioners first and foremost (see above);

  • a singular focus and a firm emphasis on substance, not sizzle;

  • an independently developed, interactive program;

  • a strong focus on implementation and continuing professional development;

  • a very high CPD allocation and great value for money.

Program overview

Day 1 (optional)
Masterclass

The Conference Masterclass on Tuesday is an optional one-day, classroom/workshop-style program presented by selected subject matter experts. The emphasis is on an active-learning environment featuring small, high-quality peer group interaction where in-depth Socratic debate and active discussion is encouraged (indeed, expected!).

Days 2 & 3
Critical Issues
Forum & Due Diligence Forum

The main two-day Conference days feature the 10-hour, plenary style Critical Issues Forum and the 4-hour Due Diligence Forum electives program.

The Critical Issues Forum is designed by our specialist, experienced and independent team to cover two of our three pillars – Markets and Strategies. It features 20 leading investment thinkers from around the world, presenting on contemporary and emerging portfolio construction issues related to the Conference theme. Each CIF session includes dedicated Q&A time in which our electronic Gizmo technology enables delegates to send comments and questions to our Inquisitors (investment experts we select for their forthright, analytical thinking) who are on-stage with our CIF Presenters.

The 4-hour Due Diligence Forum electives program Our unique Due Diligence Forum elective program focuses on Investing, PortfolioConstruction Forum’s third pillar. It features 20 more international and local investment experts presenting pre-approved Research Papers on specific investment issues. Delivered in two timeslots on each of the main two Conference days, each DDF timeslot offers delegates the choice of five concurrent electives, delivering a total of 20 sessions over the main two Conference days. That is, delegates attend four DDF sessions during Conference, and after Conference, can "attend" the remaining 16 via the online Conference Resources Kit.

Conference is not just a talk-fest. Delegates are issued with an Implementation Worksheet for each component of the program so they can record their key takeouts. Plus, the program includes a Key Takeouts session in which our Inquisitors provide their takeouts and actions they think delegates should be considering as a result when building investor portfolios.

Post Conference
Resources Kit

Post-Conference, delegates’ learning continues via an extensive online Resources Kit – an invaluable set of continuing education material including presentations, podcasts, videos, papers and blog comment opportunity across the Masterclass, Critical Issues Forum, and Due Diligence Forum programs. The Resources Kit allows delegates to revisit the jam-packed program, access support material referred to during the program, review the key takeouts and portfolio construction implications, better determine actions they’ll take to build better quality investor portfolios - and share the content and conclusions with business colleagues and clients.

Conference 2011 - Thinking about the woods AND the trees

For a long time, practitioners could devote themselves to company financials and valuations, with 'set and forget' asset allocation models. But then along came the biggest macro economic shock in more than a generation - suddenly, macro mattered and the challenge was to position portfolios around the world's macro economic risks and opportunities.

Now the challenge (and opportunity) is to combine these two ways of thinking - to position portfolios to benefit from positive long-term macro opportunities while avoiding the macro risks that might derail portfolios in the shorter term AND then carefully select securities in which to invest.

Conference helped delegates better understand the key macro AND micro issues and what they mean for investor portfolios - so they can successfully navigate through the woods AND the trees.

Conference 2010 - Building shock resistant portfolios

With sovereign uncertainty and global systemic risk at unprecedented levels and likely to remain so for much of the decade, markets are likely to be volatile for years, lurching from one shock to the next, with rallies between. So who do we build shock resistant portfolios?

Conference 2009 - Investing in the new reality

The 2009 Conference was the first post Global Financial Crisis. It was a very different investment environment compared to a year prior - some things had changed forever; others only temporarily. Some things had not changed at all. But which was which? What WAS the new reality? And what did it mean for construction investor portfolios?
